Launch of the Green Climate Fund Private Sector Strengthening Readiness Project

The Vanuatu Business Resilience Council (VBRC), a standing committee of VCCI, is pleased to announce the engagement of two new local consultants to begin the implementation of a new Green Climate Fund (GCF) funded project in Vanuatu, ‘The GCF Readiness Project – mobilizing the Vanuatu Private Sector towards climate change action’. What is the Vanuatu Business Resilience Council?

The Vanuatu Business Resilience Council (VBRC) was established in late 2017 by support through UNDP’s Connecting Business initiative (CBI), and is a standing committee of Vanuatu’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The VBRC’s role is to coordinate and strengthen engagement of the private sector in disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, response and recovery, and climate change adaptation and mitigation in Vanuatu. The Council is currently made up of 7 executive members. These members are individuals of the private sector with representation from small and large business, tourism, finance, logistics and climate change advisory services. The VBRC represents the private sector on the National Advisory Board on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction (NAB) as an observer, representing local business and industry. Business Preparedness Planning Workshops in Santo, Malekula and Tanna

Over 100 business owners and operators across three provincial locations have completed intensive one day workshops on Business Preparedness Planning, aimed at building the resilience of the private sector to disruptions caused by both manmade and natural events. VCCI trainers Yvonne Leo Taiki, Irene Titek and Jack Ulas from Youth Challenge travelled to Luganville, Lakatoro, and Lenakel over the past 3 weeks to deliver these trainings. ‘The purpose of the workshops was to guide businesses through a planning process by which the end product is a tailored Business Continuity or Preparation Plan, to be created with staff input and implemented in times of business disruption. The Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) is a Statutory Body established in 1995 by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Vanuatu CAP 236 Act. This legislation sets the structure of the “Capital Council” at 16 members. These members represent: small and large business, tourism, agriculture, finance, construction, manufacturing, land, air and sea transport, women’s organisations and public utilities Every business license holder in Vanuatu is automatically a member of VCCI, with voting rights at each Annual General Meeting. Each Council member is voted in by business owners for two-year terms. Council members’ terms are staggered to ensure representation continuity.
